We have got big spiders in Norway too, but they are not dangerous. Size wise they might not be that large either, but these guys were big enough for my girlfriend. We discovered them under the stairs outside our house. While painting our house this weekend we moved the stairs in front of the house and below we found a few of these guys. My guesstimate is that the body (without the legs) was about 1-2 cm long. Including the legs it was about 5-8 centimeters in diameter. After checking out a few sites it seems that they are some kind of Liocranidae (Norwegian) Updated: This is known as a dust spider or dustbunny spider. Here are two Norwegian sitations: FHI and edderkopper.net.
If you happen to know what they are called, please leave a comment below.
i was camping in the woods in Norway (thanks to the wonderful freedom to roam, to which i own such gratitude and respect since i dont have it here in my country) and a spider was on my tent, i got a little bit scared and i took a stick and put it out, alive, since i respect wildlife and well the spider belongs more there than myself, but then its good to know they are not dangerous 🙂
How common is it to see such a big spider in Norway? We are considering moving to your beautiful country.
Extremely rare, and they are not dangerous for people 🙂
Acutally, what you have got there is possibly the beginning of a big problem. Do a search for spiders in Ireland, e.g., http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/343118/False-widow-alert-Millions-of-KILLER-spiders-on-loose-across-UK
Sure, climate issues is a real problem, but these spiders are not venomous for people. They hide in dark places and kill other insects, which I find OK 🙂 But that does not stop the warming of the world to be an enormous problem. The further north/south you live the bigger the problem.
